Signs of a cooling problem
- The temperature gauge climbs, or the car overheats in traffic.
- Coolant under the front of the car: green, orange or pink, and sweet-smelling.
- Steam or a sweet smell from under the hood.
- The heater blows cold air.
- A whine or wobble from the water pump pulley.
Don't keep driving hot
Driving an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head or blow the head gasket, which costs far more than a water pump. If the gauge is in the red, stop in a safe place and shut the engine off.
Never open a hot radiator or coolant cap. The coolant is under pressure and can burn you.
Why some pumps are quoted
On many engines the water pump bolts to the front and is driven by the serpentine belt. Those start from $225.
On others it's driven by the timing belt or sits inside the engine, which means much more teardown. Those are quoted, starting from $450, and it often makes sense to replace the timing belt at the same time.

Questions
How much does water pump replacement cost in Douglasville?
Labor for a belt-driven water pump starts from $225. Timing-belt or internal pumps are quoted from $450. Parts are separate, plus a $45 service call.
Can a mobile mechanic replace a water pump?
Yes, at your home or work, as long as the car is on a safe, level spot.
Could it just be the thermostat?
Yes. A stuck thermostat can cause overheating or a cold heater. It starts from $95 in labor, and we check it before recommending a pump.
Is it safe to drive an overheating car?
No. Stop, turn the engine off and call. Driving it hot can cause much more expensive engine damage.
