Alternator or Battery?Douglasville mobile mechanic guide

Know which part failed before you buy one.

The Short Answer

A bad battery usually won't start the car; a bad alternator usually lets the car start, then die. The battery stores power to crank the engine. The alternator recharges it and runs the electrics while you drive. A charging test tells you for sure.

  • Battery test
  • Charging output test
  • Cable and ground check
  • Alternator replacement if it's needed

Signs pointing to the battery

  • The car is slow to crank or just clicks, especially on a cold morning.
  • It starts fine after a jump and keeps running normally.
  • The battery is more than 3 to 5 years old. Georgia heat shortens battery life.
  • Corrosion on the terminals or a swollen battery case.

Signs pointing to the alternator

  • The battery warning light comes on while you're driving.
  • Headlights and dash lights dim or flicker, or brighten when you rev the engine.
  • The car dies while driving, or starts with a jump and dies again soon after.
  • A new battery goes dead within days.
  • A whining noise or a hot electrical smell from the engine.

The simple voltage check

With a basic multimeter: a healthy, fully charged battery reads about 12.6 volts with the engine off. With the engine running, a working charging system usually reads roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts.

If the running voltage is about the same as the engine-off voltage, or drops below 13, the alternator probably isn't charging. A load test is still the best way to confirm the battery.

Can a bad alternator kill a new battery?

Yes. If the alternator isn't charging, the car runs on the battery alone until it's flat. That's why people sometimes replace a battery, and it dies again a few days later.

We test the battery, the cables and the alternator's output before recommending any part. Alternator labor starts from $140.

Questions

What does a bad alternator sound like?

Often a whining or growling noise from the front of the engine that rises with engine speed. A squeal can also come from a slipping belt.

Will a car run with a bad alternator?

Briefly. It runs on battery power until the battery is drained, then stalls.

How long does a car battery last in Georgia?

Typically 3 to 5 years. Summer heat speeds up battery wear.

Can a mobile mechanic test my alternator at home?

Yes. We test the battery and charging system where the car is parked. An electrical diagnosis is $150.
